Murder of infant in Kypseli: Contradictions from parents, DNA and children's testimony
The couple is taken before an investigating judge on Friday on manslaughter charges. DNA results confirmed the biological relationship, but revealed a surprise regarding the 9-year-old.
Parents before investigating judge — conflicting accounts of infant's death and birth
On Friday, 4 September, a 43-year-old Greek man and a 38-year-old German woman will be taken before an investigating judge on charges of murdering the infant in Kypseli, according to Newsit.gr. They will be accompanied by a third suspect, a 26-year-old Afghan man.
The charges against the couple include premeditated manslaughter of a family member in complicity, unlawful possession of firearms and use of firearms, unlawful possession of ammunition in complicity, as well as false testimony on repeated occasions and once. The 26-year-old is additionally charged with an offence concerning a minor girl, with whom he allegedly had a relationship, as well as possession of ammunition and false testimony.
Contradictions over date of birth and presence at time of death
The two defendants give different accounts on critical points. The mother claims the infant was born in 2023, while the father states 2021. On the issue of presence at the time of death, the mother maintains she was not present, while the father has stated that the entire family was present.
On only one point do their statements coincide: both claim that the knife wounds to the infant's body were inflicted when they attempted to break the ice around the dead baby, using a knife.
DNA: confirmation with a surprise
The results of DNA tests, which Mega reported according to Newsit.gr, confirmed that the 43-year-old man and the 38-year-old woman are the biological parents of the dead infant, the 15-year-old and the 12-year-old. However, the 9-year-old was found to be the son of only the 38-year-old German woman — and not of the 43-year-old, despite the couple having claimed from the outset that all four minors are their shared biological children.
The authorities sought genetic analysis for all three minors in order to determine whether this is a natural family or a case of abduction and exploitation of minors — especially given that both the 38-year-old mother and the 15-year-old daughter are pregnant.
What the children say — examinations in the presence of specialists
The three minors were examined in the presence of child psychologists. The 15-year-old allegedly stated that she knew about the baby's death, and that she later learned that the dead infant had been placed in freezing storage. The 12-year-old allegedly also mentioned that at some point he was informed about the baby's existence in the freezer. The 9-year-old, according to the same information, knew nothing.
The children's testimony has not been completed. A second and third round of examination in the presence of specialists is planned.
The dead infant, according to the case details, was transported in a frozen state from house to house, whilst its minor siblings remained under the same roof.
