Infant murder in Kypseli: Contradictions by parents, DNA and children's testimonies

The couple accused of murdering an infant in Kypseli is being brought before an examining magistrate on Friday, with contradictory statements and new data from DNA tests.

Parents with contradictory accounts before the examining magistrate — new DNA findings for the Kypseli infant

According to Google News GR — Crime, on Friday, 4 September, a 43-year-old Greek man and a 38-year-old German woman accused of murdering an infant in a flat in Kypseli are being brought before an examining magistrate.

The couple faces charges of intentional homicide of a family member in complicity, illegal possession and use of weapons, and illegal possession of ammunition in complicity, as well as false testimony, both continuous and singular. With them, the examining magistrate will also hear a third defendant, a 26-year-old Afghan, who is charged with possession of ammunition and false testimony — in addition to a felony charge relating to a minor.

Contradictions on basic facts

The two defendants give different accounts of critical points in the case. They even disagree on when the infant was born: the mother claims the child was born in 2023, whilst the father states it was born in 2021.

Similarly, the mother claims she was absent at the time of death, whilst the father has stated the entire family was present. On only one point do their accounts coincide: both assert that the knife wounds on the infant's body were inflicted when they attempted to break the ice in which the dead baby was encased, using a knife.

DNA results — question mark over the 9-year-old

DNA testing confirmed that the 43-year-old and 38-year-old are the biological parents of the dead infant. According to Mega, the examination also showed that the 15-year-old and the 12-year-old are biological children of both, as the couple has maintained from the outset.

However, the results for the 9-year-old contradict the couple's claims: the 9-year-old appears to be the son of only the 38-year-old German woman. Authorities had requested DNA samples from all three minors — the 15-year-old, who is pregnant, the 12-year-old, and the 9-year-old — wishing to rule out possible abduction or exploitation of minors, given that both the mother and the 15-year-old daughter are pregnant.

What the children revealed

Authorities are also seeking information through the testimonies of the minor children who lived under the same roof as the infant — a child who, according to the case evidence, was transported frozen from house to house.

The three children were examined in the presence of child psychologists. The 15-year-old is reported to have disclosed that she knew the infant had died and later learned that the dead baby had been placed in the freezer. The 12-year-old is reported to have stated that at some point he learned of the infant's existence in the freezer. The 9-year-old, according to reports, knew nothing.

The children's testimonies have not been completed — a second and third round of examination in the presence of specialists will follow.
