Murder of lifeguard on Syros: internal camera and old enmities hold key

New details emerge about the July murder of 42-year-old Evangelia in Ano Syros, revealing a previous clash with the accused and unanswered questions surrounding a security camera memory card.

Internal camera without memory card and old enmities at centre of investigation

More than a month after the murder of 42-year-old lifeguard Evangelia in Ano Syros, new details have emerged that broaden the questions surrounding the 41-year-old accused. According to Newsit.gr, the case is developing with contested accounts, depositions from friends and relatives, and a critical gap in the security camera's internal recording file.

The killing occurred on Thursday, 23 July 2026. Evangelia, wearing black clothing and a hood with her features concealed, went to the accused and his wife's house that afternoon. After his arrest, the 41-year-old claimed that the woman attempted to rob them and that he stabbed her in the back in self-defence, after first throwing flower pots and chairs at her whilst chasing her.

"The most disgusting couple that exists"

A close friend of Evangelia spoke today, 3 September 2026, on Live News and revealed that the murder victim had expressed hostility towards the accused and his wife nearly two years before the crime.

"Two years ago, before they split up, she told me that one more reason she was splitting with [Beep] was this couple, because he continues to speak to them and I don't want us to have any, any contact because they are the most disgusting couple that exists," the friend said, adding: "Something had been going on for a long time. There was some problem from way back."

She stressed that Evangelia had never used such harsh language about any other person, whilst her former partner, Antonis, loved the accused's children.

The visit and its purpose

The friend's deposition strengthens the position of Evangelia's close relatives, who insist that the 42-year-old did not go to the house that afternoon for robbery, but to warn the accused. According to their account, Evangelia had recently learnt that the 41-year-old had bothered someone from her close circle, and visited his house in order to confront him.

Camera without card — the critical gap

In early July, a few days before the murder, the accused's house had been broken into, which prompted him to install two security cameras — one external and one internal. The footage from the external camera is already in the hands of the authorities.

As for the internal camera, however, the accused claimed he had not placed a memory card in it. When the police arrived at the scene, the card was indeed missing — a fact that Evangelia's father finds extremely suspicious.

"I consider it very likely that there was a memory card in the internal camera, which was hastily removed immediately after the incident, either by the accused himself or by his wife, before the police arrived at the scene," said the father of the 42-year-old, according to Live News.

This matter takes on critical significance, given that the accused's side argues that the fatal stabbing was inflicted inside the house. If there had indeed been internal recording, the footage would have confirmed or refuted the self-defence account.

The investigation by the competent authorities is ongoing, whilst the local community on Syros remains shocked by the crime that marked the island in the late July.
