Rescue worker's murder on Syros: Internal security camera without memory card is critical issue
Authorities are investigating the fate of an internal security camera in the home of the accused man on Upper Syros. The family contests the claim that there was no memory card.
Internal camera without footage at centre of investigation into Syros murder
A new evidential issue has emerged in the case of the rescue worker's murder on Syros: the internal security camera that was located in the kitchen of the accused man's residence on Upper Syros, at the location where—according to the defence—the fatal stab wound was inflicted, did not yield any audiovisual material to the authorities.
According to Newsbeast, citing reporting by Live News, the accused man had installed two security cameras in his residence in early July—one external and one internal. The installation was prompted by a burglary that had previously occurred at the property.
Footage from the external camera, which had a memory card, is already in the hands of the authorities. By contrast, no corresponding material has been provided from the internal camera in the kitchen.
The accused man is said to claim that he had purchased the internal camera but had never put it into operation because he had not installed a memory card in it. When police officers arrived at the house, the memory card was indeed not found in the device.
The side of the victim's family expresses serious doubts about this account. The father of the murdered woman believes it is likely that there was a memory card in the camera and that it was removed immediately after the incident—either by the accused man himself or by his wife, before the police arrived.
The matter takes on critical importance for the investigation, given that the defence argues that the fatal stab wound was inflicted inside the house. If there had been recorded material from the internal camera, it could have confirmed or refuted this account.
The authorities are now called upon to establish whether there was ever a memory card in the device and whether it is technically possible to recover any data. The result of the examination is expected to be decisive for the complete reconstruction of events inside the residence.
