More than a month after the murder of 42-year-old Evangelia in Ano Syros, her father speaks devastated on Live News. New evidence links the victim to a previous burglary at the same house.
Father of 42-year-old: "I lost my child" — new evidence in Syros murder
More than a month has passed since the murder of 42-year-old Evangelia in Ano Syros, and her father has not yet been able to adjust to life without his daughter. Newsit.gr reports the shocking words he uttered while speaking on the Live News programme.
"I have never gone through such a dark period in my life. I lost my child. He slaughtered my child, in a nutshell. He tortured my child," Evangelia's father said, visibly upset. "He not only wanted to silence him, he wanted to pour out all his hatred, all his anger upon him," he added.
The timeline of the murder
The murder took place on Thursday 23 July 2026, when the 42-year-old rescue worker appeared at the home of a couple in Ano Syros with her face covered, wearing black clothes and a hood. The 41-year-old defendant claimed he acted in lawful self-defence, as the victim allegedly attempted a robbery; he attacked her with a knife in the back and chased her through the streets of Syros, throwing flower pots and chairs.
The defendant was brought before the Syros Misdemeanour Court on Tuesday 4 August, which decided on his remand in custody.
The parents: "Calculated murder"
Evangelia's parents flatly reject the claim of lawful self-defence. They believe the 41-year-old recognised their daughter and decided to "silence her". This version provokes fury among the victim's close relatives.
The murdered woman's uncle, also speaking on Live News, explained why he believes his niece chose to cover her face: "She wanted to cause fear in him and get the warning that he should not proceed". He added that the meeting lasted only seven seconds and that his niece's aim was solely to threaten: "I am one hundred per cent certain and I have not even seen any video".
New evidence: the victim on the island on the day of the burglary
A few days before the murder, a burglary had occurred at the same house. Police correspondent Vasilis Lampropoulos revealed on Live News that new evidence from shipping companies now confirms Evangelia's presence on the island during that period.
"It is now certain, confirmed and has been included in the case file based on shipping company evidence based on ship tickets, that the rescue worker in the previous burglary attempt had arrived one day earlier on Syros and had left one day after the attempted burglary from the island, a fact that is causing great concern," Lampropoulos stated. According to him, acquaintances of the woman had claimed she did not visit Syros frequently.
The gun safe and the possible moral accomplice
A rifle gun safe found inside the defendant's house appears to play a central role in the investigation. According to Lampropoulos, police authorities believe the safe contained money and that someone attempted to open it — unsuccessfully the first time.
"Someone to help him open — or, as police estimate — the opening of this gun safe where the money was inside," the police correspondent noted. The authorities are examining "very seriously the possibility that there is a moral accomplice in the case — someone who was giving relevant instructions either on Syros or elsewhere".
Friend of the defendant: "I don't believe it"
An eyewitness and friend of the 41-year-old defendant expressed his surprise: "I cannot believe that something was done deliberately. He was a very good friend of mine. I have known him since he was a five-year-old child," he said.
Evangelia's father concluded with words that reflect his profound grief: "These are with me now. Images and photographs will remind us of them".
