Murder of Evangelia on Syros: What telephone records reveal
The 42-year-old rescue worker made telephone calls to two relatives of the accused during the attempted break-in. New evidence sheds light on the crime in Ano Syros.

New evidence from Evangelia's calls implicates the accused's circle
Three months after the murder of 42-year-old rescue worker Evangelia on Syros, analysis of telephone data is expected to bring new people into focus, according to Newsit.gr.
Evangelia's final calls, her presence on the island that day and her movements before the homicide constitute the most critical pieces of the puzzle that authorities are attempting to piece together.
The 42-year-old's mobile phone registered in Ano Syros on 3 July
Police journalist Vasilis Lampropoulos revealed the findings of the lifting of telephone secrecy. According to mobile telephone mast analysis, Evangelia's mobile phone on 3 July — the day of the attempted break-in — was connected to a mast in Ano Syros, at the location where the accused's house is situated.
"We have a new significant piece of evidence," Lampropoulos stated. "Her mobile phone on 3 July was registered, it was in the area based on the mast in Ano Syros — there where the house is, which was targeted at that time for the break-in and then the attempted invasion, with the known tragic consequences."
An even more critical finding: judicial and police authorities believe that during the attempted break-in — and possibly during the invasion — Evangelia made telephone calls to two people. Both are connected to the accused as members of his family circle.
"There are two telephone calls in both instances," Lampropoulos stated, adding that it remains unclear whether these calls are directly related to the attempted break-in or whether they constitute coincidental communication. "One of them appears to be known to her, he is her cousin from Syros," he clarified.
The accused's ex-wife speaks for the first time
Months after the crime, the accused's ex-wife decided to speak publicly on "Live News". She stated that she cannot believe her ex-husband was involved in such an incident and denied claims that he had committed child abuse from the victim's family circle.
"We have been left speechless. I cannot believe that something like this has happened. And with the particular person," she said. "Nor had his name ever been mentioned in our conversations."
She described how Evangelia had called her that evening before the events, informing her that she would be arriving on the island. "She told me that 'given that such things are happening here, where have we come to?'. My daughters had told me," she stated.
Regarding claims of child abuse, the ex-wife was categorical: "I think it is very bad what has been said, and it is — to put it bluntly — a lie. He should never have been seen, nor should they fear him, nor should he have harmed them."
The woman had two children with the accused and two others with the cousin of the murdered woman. As she explained, the children knew each other and played together, as they lived in the same house.
Evangelia's family: "She wanted to warn him"
The parents and close relatives of the murdered woman insist that Evangelia went that afternoon to the accused's house because she had learned that he had harmed someone from her close circle. According to them, she had no intention of carrying out a robbery.
"She wanted to instil fear in him and obtain the warning that 'do not proceed'," relatives stated.
The accused's side maintains a different account: the 41-year-old claims he was acting in lawful self-defence that afternoon and that he was unaware that the intruder was a woman.
Since the afternoon of 23 July, the local community of Ano Syros has remained in shock. Both sides seek to have the whole truth about the crime revealed.
