Three men are in custody for the fatal attack on the 49-year-old president of the Apesokario community in Messara, who suffered blows to the head in late March and died following prolonged hospitalisation in the city's hospital.
Authorities proceeded to arrest a 57-year-old livestock breeder, his 32-year-old son and a 59-year-old employee of theirs, three months after the victim's death. According to reports from newsit.gr, police relied on testimony from citizens, mobile phone data and digital traces to reach the suspects.
The victim is reported to have been attacked with a sharp object, possibly a shepherd's knife, resulting in serious head injuries. Despite the serious wounds, the 49-year-old managed to reach his home, where he was found by his wife. He remained in a comatose state for approximately fifteen minutes before being transferred to a hospital.
A relative of the victim stated that the attack was triggered because the community leader had made remarks to the perpetrators about sheep grazing in unauthorised areas. The same person added that it is still being investigated whether all of those arrested participated in the fatal act or only one of them.
Particular interest attaches to the presence of the 32-year-old among those arrested. This individual had previously been convicted for the death of Vangelis Giakoumakis at the Dairy School in Ioannina, having received a three-year suspended sentence for dangerous bodily harm committed jointly and in continuation. That case involved systematic harassment against a 20-year-old student.
The preliminary investigation continues under police authorities to clarify the degree of involvement of each person.
