Police have revealed new details in the murder of Stavroula Leventaki in Chania, with the perpetrator facing charges of intentional homicide.

During a press conference held today, police officers presented new details regarding the investigation into the murder of Stavroula Leventaki in the city of Chania.
The case was characterised as particularly complex, as investigations began with a ten-day delay from the victim's actual disappearance. The prosecuting authorities swiftly developed an action plan, investigating the social, family and professional environment of the unfortunate woman, whilst utilising telecommunications evidence and cross-referencing witness statements.
Police Director of Chania Taxiarch Kanellos Sgouras stated that the authorities had information from the outset that Leventaki had not left the area, whilst her mobile device had been deactivated at a specific location. Investigative measures were directed towards her tenant, who was the person who had last seen the victim and had presented contradictory statements which were confirmed.
According to footage from cameras, the final recording of the victim occurred at a distance of 83 metres from the residence where the crime was committed. Shortly thereafter, at 18:20, the suspect's vehicle was directed towards the location, whilst later the body was transported to a rural area. Traces of biological material were found in the vehicle.
After the heinous act, the perpetrator attempted to remove evidence, however omitting certain areas with blood traces. Authorities established that his statements were consistent with the evidence that was gathered, which is assessed as particularly strong. He claimed that he handed over bank cards to third parties in order for them to make withdrawals after the woman's death. Leventaki's mobile phone as well as the tools used have been disposed of.
The body was found wrapped in multiple plastic packages, with bound limbs and a gagged mouth. The perpetrator used objects such as a bottle, blade and wood for the crime. Authorities ruled out any involvement of the victim's brother.
The arrested man has been held since Friday evening for another matter related to drugs, whilst he now faces the charge of intentional homicide. A forensic examination is expected to determine the exact cause of death.
