The 43-year-old man who confessed to the murder of Stavroula Leventaki, 45, in Chania, Crete will be presented before the magistrate on Friday. His lawyer, Giannis Troïkilis, stated that his client has expressed remorse for his actions.
The 45-year-old woman disappeared on 30 May. The defendant claimed that he received the woman at his home in Varypetro, where she had gone to check for any damage to the property. According to his statement, a fierce quarrel broke out, during which the unfortunate woman grabbed a bottle to hit him. He managed to take it from her, struck her on the head, and then killed her with a knife and wood.
After the crime, the perpetrator described how he placed the body in bags, removed blood traces from the house, and used the woman's credit cards to withdraw money, attempting to make the incident appear as a theft. He buried her in a field in Vatolakko, a location he revealed to the authorities.
The corpse was found bound and gagged, in an advanced state of decomposition due to being buried approximately 20 days earlier. Forensic pathologist Stamatis Belivanis confirmed that death was due to fractures and severe traumatic brain injuries from sharp objects.
Police investigation bore fruit. Using special lighting and the Bluestar method, blood stains were identified at the suspect's residence and in his car. DNA analysis showed with very high certainty that the biological material belonged to the 45-year-old woman. Telecommunications data, CCTV footage, and witness statements completed the puzzle of evidence.
Since 30 May, the 43-year-old had attempted unsuccessfully to mislead police with contradictory statements and baseless claims. Faced with overwhelming evidence, he admitted to his actions and indicated the location where he had buried the victim.
Leventaki's brother described the defendant and his wife as "monsters", stating that he will file a complaint against both. Family members and friends of the wronged woman are demanding justice for her violent loss.
