Murder at Domokos prison: New evidence links Alket Rizai to case
Fresh information has emerged regarding the murder of Antonis Papadatos at Domokos prison in February 2026, with the name of wanted man Alket Rizai being linked to the case without charges being brought against him.

New evidence in Papadatos murder – Alket Rizai's role under investigation
Fresh information has come to light concerning the murder of long-sentence prisoner Antonis Papadatos at the main guardhouse of Domokos prison in February 2026. According to Newsit.gr, the name of Alket Rizai appears in the case — who is now wanted following his escape — though he does not face charges in connection with Papadatos's death.
Witness testimony and evidence from the case file, according to a SKAI report presented by Newsit.gr, is said to place Rizai at the prison premises at the time of the murder. The 47-year-old remains a witness in the case and categorically denies being in the old guardhouse when the gunshots occurred.
What the security camera reveals
The closed-circuit security system is reported to have recorded part of the movements that preceded the murder. It shows Papadatos initially in the shared area of the D wing, where he is in conversation with fellow inmates. Subsequently, a Bulgarian lifer is reported to have called him to follow him.
The two men head towards the guardhouse area. According to the report, Alket Rizai followed the same direction, accompanied by fellow inmates. The security footage is also reported to show a warm embrace between the head guard and Rizai in the administrative area.
Those involved then proceed to the old guardhouse — an area where, according to the report, there was no security camera. There Papadatos was shot three times in the head and face and died.
Eyewitness saw Rizai leaving
A prison employee who was an eyewitness testified that he heard gunshots from the old guardhouse and subsequently saw Alket Rizai leaving the area. Meanwhile, forensic examination is reported to have found traces of blood on his shoes and gunpowder residue on his clothing. These findings are the subject of judicial investigation and do not in themselves constitute evidence of involvement in the murder.
Rizai himself denies any involvement. "I am clean and I do not fear anything. I was not inside the old guardhouse at the time the act was committed," he is reported to have stated.
The Bulgarian defendant and the clash account
A Bulgarian lifer has been charged with the murder, who is reported to have taken responsibility for Papadatos's death. According to his claim, the victim attempted to attack the head guard with a pistol hidden in his shorts, tried to grab the weapon and during this struggle the gun fired fatally. After the gunshots, he is reported to have left the weapon and surrendered.
This account is being examined as part of the judicial investigation. The authorities, according to the report, are also investigating the possibility that this was a premeditated act.
Head guard remanded in custody — release request rejected
The head guard, who was present at the time of the murder, has been ordered remanded in custody. According to the charges, he gave contradictory statements during examination. He contends that during the incident he tried to protect himself and did not see exactly what happened, whilst claiming that Rizai had left the area a few minutes before the gunshots. His lawyer, Dimitris Gavellas, argues that his client found himself "in the wrong place, at the wrong time" and could not have prevented the incident. A release request he submitted in August was rejected.
The case gains new dimension following escape
The case returned to the spotlight following Alket Rizai's escape from prison. The authorities are examining information suggesting that the wanted man may have headed towards northern Greece, with a possible destination of Albania. This scenario has not been officially confirmed.
The case file for the murder of Antonis Papadatos remains open. The authorities continue to investigate the exact circumstances under which the prisoner was taken to the old guardhouse and murdered there.
