Two arrests for attempted fraud of elderly woman in Kalambaka
Two Greek nationals, aged 20 and 25, were arrested following a pursuit on the E65 motorway after attempting to obtain €5,000 from an elderly woman in Pefki, Kalambaka.
Pursuit on E65 and arrest of fraudsters following attempted deception of elderly woman
Two Greek nationals — a 20-year-old and a 25-year-old — were arrested on the afternoon of Thursday, 24 September in the wider Trikala region, following a pursuit on the E65 motorway. According to ERT, the vehicle in which they were travelling was eventually immobilised at the Longos toll station in Trikala.
A case file was drawn up against the two men — as applicable — for attempted fraud in collusion, dangerous driving, and disobedience, by the Meteora Police Department.
The attempted fraud
Earlier that same afternoon, an unknown caller contacted an elderly resident of the Meteora Municipality area by telephone, presenting themselves as a relative. The caller claimed there was a need to convert money into another currency and persuaded the elderly woman to place €5,000 in a bag and leave it outside her home.
When the perpetrators, travelling in a private car, arrived at the location to collect the bag, they noticed a relative of the elderly woman passing through the area and immediately withdrew.
Pursuit and arrest
Police were mobilised immediately and officers from the Meteora Department located the vehicle. The perpetrators initially stopped at a checkpoint signal, however when police officers approached, they fled at high speed, heading towards Trikala.
With the assistance of the Traffic Department, the Motorcycle Policing Unit (DIAS) and the Investigation and Crime Detection Directorate of Trikala, the vehicle was immobilised and the two suspects were arrested.
Two mobile phones were seized from their possession, as well as the vehicle itself. The arrested individuals were brought before the Magistrate Prosecutor of Trikala. The preliminary investigation is being conducted by the Meteora Police Department.
