Two women arrested over telephone fraud in Kavala
Two women have been arrested in Kavala for involvement in telephone fraud schemes — one completed and one attempted. Separate case files have been compiled that also include unknown accomplices.
Fraud posing as doctors and police officers — two arrests in Kavala
Two women were arrested in Kavala following police operations carried out on Friday and Saturday, according to In.gr. In both cases, the suspects allegedly acted as "receivers" of money and jewellery on behalf of unknown accomplices yet to be identified. A separate case file was compiled for each incident.
First case: completed fraud with male victim
On Friday morning, an unknown caller telephoned a male resident of Kavala, presenting himself as a doctor. He claimed that a relative of the victim had been injured and required immediate surgical intervention, asking him to gather money and valuables.
Subsequently, a second accomplice contacted him, posing as a police officer. He cited an alleged operation against telephone fraudsters and persuaded the man to leave his money and jewellery at locations specified to him over the telephone. The man eventually realised he was a fraud victim and notified the police.
Police officers spotted a woman travelling by private car to the predetermined collection point and arrested her. The entire amount of money and jewellery was seized from her possession and the interior of the vehicle, which was returned to the victim. The vehicle used by the arrested woman was also confiscated.
Second case: attempted fraud with threats
On Saturday afternoon, in a settlement in Kavala, an unknown caller telephoned a woman and, according to police, threatened her physical integrity in order to compel her to gather money and valuables from her home. Immediately afterwards, a second unknown person telephoned her, presenting himself as a police officer. He told her that an operation against telephone fraudsters was underway and asked her to leave items at a specific location to "contribute" to their arrest.
The woman reported the incident to the authorities. A second woman was located and arrested at the collection point after she had arrived to collect the items.
Preliminary investigation and next steps
Both arrested women are expected to be brought before the District Prosecutor of Kavala. The preliminary investigation into both cases is being conducted by the Department for Crime Prosecution and Investigation in Kavala, whilst the case files also include the unknown accomplices of the two women yet to be identified.
