The 25-year-old Eirini Mourtzoukou is referred to the Mixed Jury Court in connection with the death of 22-year-old Giorgos Monogyios. The decision was taken during her statement before the investigating magistrate.
The young woman is accused of voluntary manslaughter with possible intent. The incident that led to the legal proceedings occurred on 13 July 2021 in Mykonos, when the vehicle driven by the 25-year-old veered off course and struck a lighting pole, resulting in the fatal injury of the 22-year-old passenger.
The prosecutor who handled the case described the accused as a "violent, merciless, ruthless and highly dangerous person". Mourtzoukou herself denies the charges and claims that she had no intention of causing the victim's death.
The case provoked considerable social unrest and extensive discussion in the media, as the victim was the son of a businessman and the case attracted particular publicity.
The trial is expected to be held in the Mixed Jury Court, where the accused will be required to answer for the acts attributed to her.
