Knife attack on Mandras police station – Officer shoots 31-year-old attacker
A 31-year-old stormed into Mandras Police Station brandishing a knife and was shot by an officer after repeatedly refusing to disarm himself. According to Naftemporiki, the violent incident unfolded across two floors of the building before the perpetrator was cornered in an office on the first floor.
The attack began on the ground floor, where the 31-year-old moved threateningly towards a female officer on duty. Scope and other present officers attempted to immobilise him without success. The perpetrator escaped and headed towards the Security Department on the first floor, where officers trapped him in an office.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic: "We heard the officers shouting 'if you have a weapon take it out, bring it'. Then there was a deafening noise at the door. That man broke it, while an officer tried to keep it closed with all his weight". Other witnesses added: "We were inside, one door, one breath… We closed the door and waited for them to tell us we could leave".
When the door gave way, an officer aimed his service weapon at the intruder and called on him to calm down and disarm. The 31-year-old refused and began screaming: "Shoot, shoot, shoot, why don't you shoot me?". As he moved threateningly towards the officer, the latter opened fire.
The perpetrator was struck by a bullet that caused a penetrating wound to the abdominal area and chest. He was transported by EKAB ambulance to Thriasio Hospital, where he underwent a CT scan and was admitted to surgery. His health condition is considered particularly serious. The officer was transferred to the same hospital with a mild contusion injury to the head and is expected to be discharged shortly.
According to information from ertnews, the 31-year-old has psychological problems and has been treated three times at psychiatric facilities in Attica. A preliminary investigation is being conducted into the incident in order to clarify the circumstances under which the attack took place.
