Officials from the Greek Police responded to allegations made by former Commissioner Dimitri Avramopoulou. Mr Avramopoulou had claimed that the arrest warrant issued against him in the Qatargate corruption case had remained unread in the office of Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis for three days.
According to what he stated in a television broadcast, the specific document did not come from a European court or from Belgian justice, but from Belgian police authorities. He had stated that the minister kept it in his drawer for three days without taking action, while he himself was unaware of its existence.
At the same time, the former Commissioner had suggested that there was no political motivation behind the case, but that certain police officers tried to avoid responsibility for poor work by unjustifiably broadening the scope of the investigation.
For its part, the Greek Police categorically denied every allegation of delay or favourable treatment. As was emphasised, the document in question was transmitted immediately, within one day, to the Athens Court of Appeals Prosecutor's Office, which is responsible for matters of the SIRENE Department and the management of European Arrest Warrants via the Schengen Information System.
The services of the Greek Police stressed that they handle sensitive matters daily with absolute confidentiality and without leaks, faithfully following the instructions of the judicial authorities and respecting the individual rights of every citizen. "No one enjoys special treatment," the same sources made clear.
