Phishing in Crete: company loses nearly €20,000 in a single day

A construction company in Heraklion fell victim to electronic fraud, resulting in the loss of €19,483 from its bank account in a single day, according to Ta Nea.

The perpetrators carried out three consecutive transfers to unknown individuals — both in Greece and in the United Kingdom — leaving just €19 in the account.

The company claims that the fraud was carried out via a fraudulent website that mimicked its bank's environment. Through this, the perpetrators obtained access details and proceeded with the transfers.

Immediately after discovering the incident, the company closed the account and requested reimbursement of the stolen amount. At the same time, it expressed concern about possible gaps in the bank's security systems, which, it states, could have prevented the fraud.

The incident comes to be added to a series of similar complaints that have been recorded recently in Crete. The case has now been referred to the courts.
