Greek police arrested three suspects following bombing attack in Thessaloniki – politician's mother killed
Greece's counter-terrorism police arrested three people in connection with a series of bombing and arson attacks targeting politicians from the ruling New Democracy party in Thessaloniki. In one of these attacks, a 72-year-old mother of a politician was killed last week.

Greek counter-terrorism police arrested three individuals on Friday who are suspected of involvement in a series of bombing and arson attacks in Thessaloniki. The attacks targeted the homes of politicians from the ruling New Democracy party. In one of these attacks last week, a 72-year-old mother of a politician lost her life. The attacks were carried out on 1 July in the early morning hours. The perpetrators placed a makeshift bomb made from liquefied petroleum gas canisters under a car belonging to Aphrodite Nesterova, a member of the ruling New Democracy party. The explosion caused a fire in vehicles in the garage of an apartment building. The politician's mother sustained burns that proved fatal. Four other people were injured, including the politician herself, her father and two residents of the building. That same night the perpetrators carried out two further attacks, which however caused only material damage.
Police announced on Friday that it had arrested a 29-year-old man in Thessaloniki and a 26-year-old woman in Crete on suspicion of involvement in the bombing attack on Nesterova's home. Another man was also arrested who is suspected of harbouring the perpetrators in his flat before and after the attack. The investigation is continuing and police are searching for other individuals who may be involved in this series of attacks.
Greece has experienced numerous terrorist attacks and politically motivated violent acts over recent decades. Authorities have succeeded in dismantling most terrorist groups, but armed organisations continue to exist that regularly carry out arson and bombing attacks. In addition to politicians, their targets also include government buildings, police stations, banks and other businesses.
