On Saturday afternoon in Elliniko, Attica, officers from the local Crime Prosecution Service arrested two individuals, aged 15 and 29 respectively. The detainees are accused of participating in an organised fraud ring as well as ongoing theft.

According to information released by the Hellenic Police, the perpetrators contacted citizens by telephone, presenting themselves as representatives of a company operating in the electrical energy sector. Using various pretexts, they managed to convince their potential victims to hand over cash sums or valuable items to them.

The police operation was set up thanks to the alertness of one man. The citizen detected the attempted fraud and immediately notified the authorities. The perpetrators had asked him to put money and jewellery in a bag and leave it at a specific spot outside his apartment building. Instead of complying, he cooperated with the police and went to the meeting point accompanied by officers.

When the two suspects arrived to collect the bag, the officers immobilised them. The minor, attempting to avoid identification, had changed his clothing.

From preliminary investigation, it emerged that the group had been operating at least since June of this year. To date, four cases of fraud in areas of the Southern Suburbs have been resolved, with the illegal proceeds reaching €40,900.

During a search carried out, the authorities found and confiscated various items, while also seizing the vehicle they were using. Other individuals are also involved in the case and are being sought.

Both detainees were found to have previously engaged the prosecuting authorities for similar offences. They were brought before the prosecutor.
