Third arrest in car arson case targeting deputy mayor in Zografou — target was sports fans leader

Police from the Organised Athletic Violence Prevention Directorate arrested a 34-year-old man on Friday afternoon, 16 October, who is alleged to be the instigator of the arson attack on the car of Deputy Mayor Kostas Pitsios in Zografou. According to Dikastiko.gr, the man was located in an area of Athens and was taken into custody following an arrest warrant issued against him.

The arson attack occurred on 14 September 2026. The arrest of the 34-year-old marks the third in the context of the same investigation.

The two previous arrests

On Tuesday, 13 October, authorities had already arrested two men, aged 33 and 35, who are alleged to have carried out the attack. The 34-year-old arrested on Friday is facing charges as the person who commissioned the action.

Wrong target: the deputy mayor's car was not the intended victim

Evidence from the police investigation shows that Deputy Mayor Pitsios's vehicle was not the original target of the perpetrators. Police believe the attack was aimed at a leader of organised supporters of a major Athens team who lived in an adjacent residence. The deputy mayor's car is believed to have become a victim of mistaken target identification.
