Unknown assailants attacked the residence of a local politician in Thessaloniki. The politician's mother died from her injuries, and four other people were wounded. The counter-terrorism service is conducting an investigation.

Unknown assailants attacked the home of a local politician from the governing centre-right New Democracy (ND) party in Thessaloniki. The attack occurred in the early morning hours of Wednesday, when vehicles in the building's garage were engulfed in flames. The mother of politician Aphrodite Nestor suffered fatal burns and died. Four other people were injured, including the politician herself, her father and two other residents.
The Greek counter-terrorism service is analysing material from security cameras to identify the suspected perpetrators. According to the Athens newspaper Kathimerini, at least three people participated in the attack. Video footage from surveillance cameras shows two suspects on a motorcycle placing incendiary devices. A third motorcycle driver is believed to have acted as a lookout.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis condemned the attack in strong terms. "No tolerance for bloodshed and divisive extremism," he stated. The state would do everything to identify those responsible and hold them to account.
Greece has been shaken over recent decades by terrorist attacks and politically motivated violence. Whilst most older terrorist groups have since dissolved, armed groups from the autonomous scene continue to carry out regular arson attacks and bombings. Targets are often politicians, authorities, police stations, banks or businesses.
