The investigation into identifying the individuals who planted an incendiary device targeting Vaia Nestora in Thessaloniki is expected to take longer than originally anticipated. According to Dnews, unravelling the case and apprehending those responsible may require several more days.
Officials closely monitoring the investigation describe the perpetrators as particularly skilled in carrying out the operation. The Counter-terrorism Service has intensified its efforts, aiming to apprehend those responsible and refer them to the judiciary. Justice Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis is closely following the case and has already visited the co-capital twice.
Security officials estimate that behind the attack are individuals linked to the squat movement in Thessaloniki. As they point out, these are younger members who undertake actions, whilst older defendants move freely under restrictive conditions.
In government circles there is dissatisfaction with how the judicial authorities handle arson cases. Data from the Ministry of Citizen Protection show that over the past two and a half years, 151 people have been arrested for placing Molotov cocktails. Specifically, 78 cases were recorded in 2024, 72 in 2025 and 41 to date in 2026. Despite this, no convictions have been handed down, as no trial has been completed.
Justice Minister Giorgos Floridis's idea of combining the cases and bringing criminal charges against Rouvikonas for organised crime does not appear to be succeeding. "How can such a thing happen when Rouvikonas has been acquitted in all the trials that have taken place," comment government figures. The new leadership of the Justice Ministry is nevertheless examining the possibility.
