Panagiotis Nestoras described in a trembling voice the night his wife was killed in an arson attack in Thessaloniki.

"A petrol bomb is like a bullet" — Vagia Nestora's husband speaks about the fatal attack
With a trembling voice and visibly devastated, Panagiotis Nestoras gave his testimony today, 2 July 2026, to ErtNews about the night his wife, Vagia Nestora, lost her life during an arson attack on the family's apartment building in Thessaloniki. According to Newsit.gr, Vagia went down to the ground floor when the fire alarm was triggered, suffered serious injuries and succumbed a few hours later despite doctors' efforts.
"Around 04:00 in the early morning the fire alarm went off. My wife went downstairs to check on the car. I was at the entrance of the flat and went to get the phone," Panagiotis Nestoras said. "They are murderers. A petrol bomb is like a bullet," he added, his voice breaking.
In the same attack, the couple's daughter, Aphrodite Nestora, a New Democracy politician, was injured, suffering burns to her hands and feet and unable to walk. She is hospitalised at Hippocratic Hospital and is expected to be transferred to the Burns Unit and Plastic Surgery Clinic of Papanikolaou Hospital. Panagiotis Nestoras himself is also hospitalised at Hippocratic Hospital with respiratory problems, with doctors expected to discharge him on Friday.
"Aphrodite went to see her mother and suffered burns to her hands and feet. She cannot walk. They are criminals. My daughter and I will remain strong," the father stated.
The arson attacks that night targeted three different apartment buildings in Thessaloniki. In total, two other people were injured besides the Nestora family: one remains hospitalised at Hippocratic Hospital, whilst the other injured person was discharged from the Pulmonology Clinic and transferred to the Cardiac Unit of the same hospital due to cardiac problems.
Panagiotis Nestoras publicly bid farewell to his wife through a post on social media: "Today, after the murderous blow by these foolish hooligans, anarchists and cowards, I say goodbye to my wife VAGIA, to the land of angels, a heroine of life, beloved by all, a person of devotion." In the same post he mentioned that Vagia "went to find our daughter Nikoleta, whom she loved so dearly" and concluded: "My daughter Aphrodite and I are strong, we are proud of you, we will continue united."
