Five people were injured in the early hours of Wednesday in Thessaloniki following firebomb attacks using improvised incendiary devices on the homes of three officials from the ruling New Democracy party, according to Greek police. The incidents occurred within approximately 15 minutes of each other.
The attacks targeted the homes of the head of the party's executive committee, Zesis Ioackeimovitsch, former MP Savvas Anastasiadis and former party candidate Aphrodite Nestor, according to Kathimerini newspaper via News.ro.
During the final attack, five people were injured, including Aphrodite Nestor and her parents, who were taken to hospital. Four vehicles in a garage of the building were destroyed by fire.
The improvised incendiary devices consisted of small bottles of liquefied petroleum gas. Authorities believe the attacks were carried out by the same individuals. Police are gathering video footage from security cameras to identify and arrest the perpetrators. The investigation has been assigned to the counter-terrorism service.
Government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis condemned the attacks on private radio station Skai and called for the immediate arrest of those responsible. "This coincidence is, obviously, not random," he noted, adding that police are conducting an investigation. "When you throw containers of petrol at cars and houses (...) you accept the possibility that people will die," Marinakis said.
Left-wing opposition parties also condemned the attacks. Attacks using incendiary devices by small groups from the left or anarchists against political figures, banks or companies are frequent in Greece, causing material damage but rarely casualties.
