Thessaloniki: 28-month sentence for domestic violence in presence of minor

The Court of First Instance of Thessaloniki has sentenced a 37-year-old man to a total prison sentence of 28 months for domestic physical assault in the presence of a minor and threats, according to Dikastiko.gr. The court ruled that lodging an appeal would not suspend the execution of the sentence, with the result that the accused was immediately taken to prison.

The victim in the case is the 29-year-old partner of the accused. In her testimony before the court, the injured party described a series of violent incidents that took place over the past month.

Regarding the critical episode that led to the arrest of the 37-year-old, the woman testified that the accused struck her in the face with his head. The blow caused her to bleed from her nose and mouth, and she required medical care.

The injured party also testified that their 2.5-year-old daughter was present during all violent incidents. This fact formed the basis for the charge of domestic assault in the presence of a minor.

When questioned by the court, however, the 29-year-old stated that her relationship with the accused had been restored and that she did not wish for his imprisonment.

The 37-year-old admitted to his actions from the defendant's podium. "I did it in a moment of anger, because some scenes happened. I got angry and confused when I found out that she was hiding something from me," he said, attempting to justify his behaviour.
