Prosecutors' Union: Allegations of cover-up in Valyrakis case are unfounded
The Board of Directors of the Prosecutors' Union of Greece issued a statement expressing disapproval of the resurfacing of unsubstantiated claims of cover-up in the death case of Sifis Valyrakis, as reported by Dikastiko.gr. The Union makes clear that recent public statements surrounding the case unjustifiably target prosecutorial officials without evidentiary foundation.
According to the statement, criticism of prosecutorial and judicial decisions is legitimate, even if it is stringent. However, dissatisfaction with the outcome of a judicial proceeding does not justify the repetition of personal allegations without specific pieces of evidence. The Board emphasises explicitly: an undesired outcome of a case does not in itself constitute proof of deliberate misconduct or abuse of authority.
Special reference is made to the invocation of personal or family relations as an argument for the construction of scenarios of abusive procedures. The Union characterises these practices as sufficient to directly damage the standing of the Justice system and to undermine public confidence in institutions, if stated without substantiation.
The Union recalls that the Valyrakis case has undergone successive stages of prosecutorial and judicial evaluation. The proceedings reached the point of issuing a first-instance acquittal verdict, following all stages of review provided for by law. The attribution of this outcome to alleged misconduct by prosecutorial officials, the Board notes, disregards the entirety of the multi-layered judicial review that intervened.
Such public attacks, according to the statement, harm the reputation of officials and damage the institutional standing of the Justice system as a whole. The Prosecutors' Union emphasises that any concrete allegation must be examined by the competent bodies through the prescribed institutional procedure — not through unsubstantiated public statements.
The central message of the statement is that the Justice system must exercise its functions unaffected by pressures and personal targeting. Public discussion of judicial decisions, the Board concludes, requires substantiation, accountability and respect for judicial independence.
