18-year-old Egyptian stabbed outside school in Metaxourgeio – racist motive being investigated

A group of approximately 15 people set up an ambush on an 18-year-old student of Egyptian origin outside an evening secondary school in Metaxourgeio, stabbing him repeatedly in the back and lung. The young man is hospitalised in serious condition following emergency surgery, according to Newsit.gr.

According to information, the perpetrators waited outside the school. When the 18-year-old and another Egyptian classmate left during break to go to a nearby supermarket, the group attacked them violently. The 18-year-old sustained multiple stab wounds but managed to drag himself to the school door before collapsing bloodied in the courtyard.

The school principal, who saw the student in this condition, immediately called the police. Police officers who rushed to the scene placed a special lung seal in order to stabilise the injured person and keep him alive.

Channel Mega obtained video documentation of the attack, with footage recording the violent altercation. The 18-year-old, speaking to Mega, stated: "There were approximately 20 people, they started insulting me and attacked me. I had never seen them before. I didn't understand why they attacked me."

According to information, the young man came to Greece approximately a year and a half ago and is staying in a reception facility for minor migrants. He told police that he did not recognise any of the attackers. His friend, who was wounded in the face, has however identified one of the perpetrators, according to the same information.

The perpetrators remain at large. The authorities are conducting investigations and examining the possibility that the motives for the attack were racist.
