A 31-year-old armed with a knife stormed Mandras Police Station on Friday and was shot by an officer. He is hospitalised on life support in critical condition.

Knife invasion of Mandras police station — attacker in critical condition following surgery

A 31-year-old man stormed Mandras Police Station on Friday afternoon (4/9/26) carrying a knife and threatening police officers. He was shot by an officer, underwent surgery that evening, and according to information from Newsit.gr is hospitalised on life support in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit of Thriassio Hospital.

Eyewitnesses: "Like a scene from a film"

Two citizens who were at the station to obtain an identity card described the events to Newsit.gr as follows: "We were in the office to get our IDs and suddenly we heard the police officers shouting at each other 'if you have a weapon, take it out, bring it'". They reported that the attacker initially broke down the entrance door, which a police officer was holding closed to prevent him from entering, and while entering broke a window as well, resulting in the officer being injured.

According to the witnesses, the 31-year-old reached the first floor of the building, where he threatened a police officer with the knife. "The officer had his weapon pointed at him, and the man told him 'shoot, shoot, shoot, why don't you shoot me?'. The officer told him 'drop the knife, calm down' and as he said this, the man moved closer to stab him. The officer was forced to shoot him," the eyewitnesses reported.

Before the invasion: threat to the guard

According to reporting broadcast by Giorgos Kalliakmanis on Live News, before entering the police station, the 31-year-old allegedly threatened with the knife the officer who was at the entrance. Despite repeated appeals from police to comply, the man refused to leave and continued to move threateningly towards them.

The 31-year-old was seriously injured. EKAB was immediately called to the scene and transported him to Thriassio Hospital, where he underwent surgery for a through-and-through wound to the chest and abdomen.

Background: suicide attempt and psychiatric hospitalisations

According to reporting by Vasilis Lampropoulos on Live News, the 31-year-old's actions appear to have a vengeful character, as he had previously been arrested for domestic violence and had been transferred to a psychiatric institution.

The attacker appears to suffer from psychological problems with a history spanning many years. In April 2025 he had attempted suicide, resulting in involuntary hospitalisation at Dromokaitio. In October of the same year he was arrested for insulting and threatening a neighbour with an air rifle. In 2015 he was arrested again following a domestic incident when he threatened his partner and her mother with a knife at their home in Acharnes — an incident that also led at the time to involuntary psychiatric examination.
