Three incendiary attacks using makeshift explosive devices made from camping fuel canisters were carried out in the early hours of Wednesday at apartments of members of the governing right-wing New Democracy party in Thessaloniki, resulting in one dead and three wounded.
The attacks began at 4:00 and were completed by 4:45 in the morning outside apartment blocks in the northern Greek city. According to police, all victims resulted from the third and final attack, in which cars and motorcycles were engulfed in flames.
One of the vehicles belonged to New Democracy parliamentary candidate Aphrodite Nestora. She suffered burns, but her mother succumbed to her injuries in the intensive care unit. Two other residents of the apartment block are being treated in hospital.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who also leads New Democracy, travelled to Thessaloniki to visit the wounded. In a written statement, he described the death as confirmation of "blind violence in public life" and stressed that "the blood spilled and the divisions sown by the extremes will no longer be tolerated".
The party's political committee secretary, Konstantinos Kyranakis, stated that the attacks constituted "a real terrorist attack on the homes of New Democracy members" and that those responsible "intended to kill".
Attacks by shadowy armed groups against symbols of power or property belonging to politicians, police officers and other officials are relatively common in Greece. In most cases they cause material damage without casualties.
In July 2025, a bomb exploded outside the home of the head of the Thessaloniki Prison Officers' Union. He was not injured, but two people suffered minor injuries from glass shrapnel.
