Attack on taxi driver in Nea Ionia — 35-year-old bites and cuts off part of ear

In the early hours of 4 October 2026, a 35-year-old attacked a 54-year-old taxi driver in Nea Ionia, biting her ear and severing part of it. According to Ta Nea, the perpetrator was arrested at the scene and charges were filed against him for grievous bodily harm and threatening behaviour.

"I encountered a mad cannibal, I felt like I was in a film," the driver said during an interview with the programme Developments Now. She described how, after a failed attempt to pay by card due to poor signal, the situation escalated rapidly: the passenger grabbed her by the neck, immobilised her in her seat and, whilst she attempted to escape, bit her ear.

"He holds me with my ear bitten and his hand on my throat. I really felt like I was leaving at that moment," the woman said. According to her complaint, the 35-year-old told her: "Today is your last day, I'm going to kill you."

Video footage, circulated through Ta Nea, shows the driver running out of the taxi, with the perpetrator chasing her forcefully in the middle of the road.

Eyewitness: "He was in a frenzy"

An eyewitness who intervened described a man in a state of acute confusion. "We immobilised him. He was in a frenzy. He wasn't drunk, I didn't smell any alcohol at all. I did see him somewhat out of it though, he was stumbling — I think he was under the influence of pills," the witness said.

Even after being immobilised, the 35-year-old remained provocative. "He was saying to me: 'Do you feel proud of this? Do you feel happy? Do you feel good?'" added the witness. After police arrived, the perpetrator swore at officers during his arrest.

The witness also described the moment the injury was discovered: "His mouth was dripping blood. From that they concluded he had bitten her. Everyone was worried about a knife, but he probably bit her, because no weapon was found."

Hospitalisation and arrest

The 54-year-old driver, who was in a state of shock following the incident, was transferred urgently to Elpis Hospital, where she received first aid. The emergency services arrived at the scene approximately 20 minutes after the incident, whilst police had already arrived within the first 10 minutes.

The 35-year-old was arrested immediately and charges were filed against him for grievous bodily harm and threatening behaviour.
