Firefighting personnel experienced a concerning incident in the Aspropyrgos area on the afternoon in question. The incident is reported by the Panhellenic Association of Firefighters and Foresters, according to which individuals attacked a fire service vehicle crew whilst it was operating at a fire.
As reported by the source Newsbeast, the unit was called to tackle a fire at an encampment. Three men arrived at the scene: a seasonal firefighter, a five-year temporary firefighter and a permanent firefighter. During the operation, a group of approximately twenty individuals attacked them with the aim of removing their vehicle and equipment.
The firefighters received threats against their physical safety, whilst the attackers demanded they leave the area. It is noted that no police presence or support from the authorities was available at the scene.
The association is calling for immediate investigation of the incident by the Fire Service Headquarters. Specifically, it seeks to establish under what conditions the order to intervene was given and whether the protective measures provided for were implemented.
The trade union organisation emphasises that similar incidents cannot be repeated, as they endanger firefighters' lives and obstruct their work. It is in communication with the relevant ministry, whilst a parliamentary question has been tabled with Minister Evangelos Tournas.
