Attack on DEDDIE workshop in Zoniana: Technician beaten with crowbar and equipment stolen

A violent attack against employees of DEDDIE occurred yesterday in Zoniana, Mylopotamos, in Crete. Two technicians who had gone to the area to carry out electricity meter replacement work came under an unprovoked attack by a group of people.

According to what one of the technicians reported to ERT Chania, at around 10 o'clock in the morning, whilst they were in the village to carry out their work, they were approached by 7 to 10 people aged 25-35. The perpetrators, without offering any explanation, began to intimidate them and demand that they leave the area.

One of the attackers was carrying a crowbar. The technicians tried to explain that they had nothing to do with any planned power cuts, but the perpetrators would not listen and merely repeated their demand that they leave.

Subsequently, the attackers caused damage to the service vehicle, smashing the rear and side windows. During the incident, one of the perpetrators struck one of the technicians on the hand with the crowbar whilst he was trying to protect his tablet. The injury was, fortunately, minor.

A tablet and an old meter that had been replaced were taken from the workshop. Blood stains were also found at the scene, however these did not belong to the employees but to one of the perpetrators, likely from an injury sustained during the attack.

The technicians did not contact the police, but informed their company. The Rethymno Technical Union issued a statement condemning the incident, describing it as absolutely unacceptable. It is calling on DEDDIE management and the relevant authorities to take all necessary measures to protect employees.
