A 28-year-old young driver of Egyptian descent has been sentenced to ten years imprisonment by the Three-Member Court of Misdemeanours in Heraklion for the tragic accident that occurred in September 2025 on the road section Stalida – Malia. The incident resulted in the sudden death of a 23-year-old woman.
The court found him responsible for dangerous driving that led to fatal injury, fleeing the scene, and illegal entry into the country. The sentences imposed were ten years for the first charge, five months for the second, and twelve months for the third.
The verdict rejected any mitigating circumstances, and an appeal to a higher court does not suspend the execution of the sentence.
According to the facts of the case, the unfortunate young woman had just finished work and was returning on her motorcycle. The convicted man, travelling from the opposite direction, lost control of his vehicle and collided with her motorcycle, resulting in her death.
The proceedings in the courtroom were marked by intense emotions. Relatives and friends of the young woman expressed their anger, speaking of "manslaughter" and describing the court decision as far too lenient. The 28-year-old himself claimed that there was a fault in his vehicle, an argument that was not accepted.
