Two young men were arrested in Heraklion, Crete, when they attempted to collect large quantities of cannabis via an automated parcel collection system. One of them is a 17-year-old secondary school student.

Police officers from the Drug Enforcement Division arrested two young men in Heraklion, Crete, who attempted to collect significant quantities of cannabis via an automated parcel collection system. One of the arrested individuals is a secondary school student aged just 17 years old, whilst the second is 19 years old.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Moíres, Heraklion, according to information from ERT. The 17-year-old student approached the collection point and used a numerical code that he had previously received in order to open the box and retrieve the package containing the drugs.
The police authorities, who had information about the specific shipment, were monitoring the collection operation closely. At the moment the minor attempted to take the parcel, officers intervened and proceeded with the arrest of both individuals. The 19-year-old friend was in close proximity and is considered an accomplice in the attempt to distribute the illegal substance.
The method of automated parcel collection represents an increasingly common tool for drug traffickers, as it reduces the risk of direct contact with recipients. However, the prosecuting authorities have significantly strengthened their capabilities in detecting such shipments, through cooperation with courier companies and data analysis.
Both arrested individuals were taken before the Deputy Prosecutor of the Misdemeanour Court of Heraklion, whilst the investigation continues to identify the suppliers and the broader distribution network.
