Investigation into triple arson attack that killed Vagia Nestora

The counter-terrorism service is very close to identifying those responsible for the series of arson attacks in Thessaloniki that resulted in the murder of Vagia Nestora. Police have focused their attention on a specific group of individuals from the anti-establishment sphere who have engaged the prosecution authorities in the past.

The investigation is proceeding through examination of data from mobile phones and material from security cameras in the three areas where the fires were set. Researchers are attempting to reconstruct the routes and movements of suspects both on the day of the incident and on preceding days. The available evidence suggests that the attackers approached the sites of the attacks on foot.

According to ERT, the forensic laboratories are examining samples from insulating tape, remnants of an explosive device and a container with inflammable liquid, searching for genetic material or fingerprints that will lead to the perpetrators.

The apartment building of the Nestora family suffered severe damage. The two explosions that followed one after the other, combined with the fire in the politician's vehicle, created a scene of destruction. The burnt surfaces and blackening on the walls prove the intensity of the attack, which caused respiratory problems for those living in the building.

The building manager, Despina Kritikov, described to the ERT camera how the second explosion caused cracks in windows and the entrance, allowing smoke to penetrate inside like a chimney. The residents opened the door hearing cries for help, without anticipating that the smoke would rise up to the floors above.

The daughter of the deceased, Aphroditi Nestora, who is a New Democracy politician, is being treated in the burns unit of Papanikolaou Hospital. Her family circle reports that her condition is stable and there is no cause for concern, although continuous medical monitoring is required. The funeral of Vagia Nestora is scheduled for Thursday, 9 July, at 12:00 noon, in Kozani.
