Investigation into Mazonakas death: Police unlocked machine before defendants' statements

Police establish conditions of Mazonakas death — digital evidence at centre of investigation

According to reader.gr, police managed to establish how the disputed machine operated at the private clinic where singer Giorgos Mazonakas lost his life — and even before the two defendants gave their statements.

The police spokesperson revealed this information to ERT News, Konstantia Dimoglidi, characterising the finding as "evidence of particular significance for the investigative procedure". The competent investigating magistrate thus has a more complete picture of what occurred inside the clinic.

Digital evidence and lifting of telephone secrecy

The police investigation is ongoing. The authorities are examining a large volume of digital data, including mobile phones and a computer, with the aim of recovering information that may shed light on the conditions of death.

At the same time, results are awaited from the lifting of telephone secrecy. Through these it will be established whether witness statements and the claims of defendants before the investigating magistrate are consistent with the actual events.

"Police are investigating the case of a death and the circumstances under which a person died inside a private clinic," Dimoglidi said characteristically.

If the analysis of evidence reveals indications of additional offences or the involvement of other persons, a new prosecution order and guidance from the competent investigating magistrate will be required in order to expand the investigation. It is not ruled out that, depending on findings, the investigating magistrate may request the carrying out of additional investigative actions by police.

Financial aspect and fraud allegations

The financial aspect of the case is being examined separately, including the clinic's "client list". According to the spokesperson, an independent authority is conducting a parallel investigation concerning payments for services provided and whether lawful invoices were issued.

Dimoglidi clarified, however, that despite testimonies that have been made public and which could potentially be the subject of investigation into the offence of fraud, no formal complaint has been filed with a police authority or service to date.

Two persons have been charged in the case, who after their statements were ruled to be in pre-trial detention.
