Gastouní: Five arrests for arson of kiosk shop
Police identified five people allegedly responsible for setting fire to a mini market in Gastouní, Ilia. The shop belonged to a 49-year-old kiosk owner and was completely destroyed by the fire.
The investigation lasted 23 days. The prosecuting authorities managed to connect the evidence and identify the suspects. According to information from the publication, the incident occurred on 5 May 2026.
The accused allegedly obtained petrol and flammable materials. Three of them are reported to have set the fire, whilst a fourth acted as a lookout. After the act, the four fled on foot towards a nearby settlement, whilst the fifth left by car.
A few months earlier, on 21 February 2026, the same kiosk owner had been attacked by a group of Roma. The man had detained a minor who attempted to steal products from his shop. Before police arrived, relatives of the minor appeared and the kiosk owner and his son were beaten with crowbars, sticks, punches and kicks. Serious material damage was also caused to the kiosk.
The arson occurred a few weeks after the beating incident. The findings of the investigation indicate that the perpetrators had not forgotten the confrontation with the owner.
