Fifteen stab wounds and posts that "freeze"

According to Newsit.gr, the local community of Igoumenitsa remains in a state of shock following the murder of 25-year-old Penelope, who was killed on Sunday, 20 September 2026 by her 27-year-old ex-partner. The crime took place at a kiosk near a cycling path in the city, where the 25-year-old lived and worked. This is the 11th femicide recorded in Greece since the beginning of 2026.

Penelope received 15 stab wounds from the 27-year-old, who confessed to the crime. Initially, the perpetrator attempted to mislead authorities by claiming that both had been attacked by hooded assailants. On 22 September he requested and was granted a postponement to make his statement.

A prosecutor and an investigating magistrate visited the hospital where the perpetrator continues to be treated under guard. He was prosecuted for wilful homicide, illegal possession of weapons and carrying weapons, as well as possession of narcotics. He maintains that he did not intend to kill Penelope.

Separation and threats

The couple had separated approximately one month before the murder, and the 27-year-old had been threatening the 25-year-old, according to reports. Penelope's colleagues describe her as very distressed following the separation. Her landlady told Live News: "She was separate. Very nice. He would come and stay for a short time and leave. We didn't hear them arguing or anything. But now in the end they split up."

A female neighbour of the 27-year-old gave a different picture, also speaking to Live News: "They made a fuss. He made a fuss. We heard shouts, they were arguing, but we couldn't see what was happening inside."

"The same man who captivated me disappointed me"

In the final weeks of her life, Penelope recorded her pain on social media. On 21 August she wrote: "The same man who captivated me, the same man disappointed me." Four days later, on 25 August, she posted: "You can't trust even yourself."

Six days before her murder she wrote on her profile: "The decision you didn't make is the one that never changes." A few hours before she was killed, her last post was: "If you ignore a problem, it doesn't stop existing. Right?"

Biologist preparing for a postgraduate degree in Athens

Penelope was a biologist and worked for Attiko Metro. Over the last eighteen months she had moved to Igoumenitsa for professional reasons, but according to reports she was preparing to return to Athens in the coming days to begin a postgraduate programme.

A colleague told Live News: "She was a very nice girl. A good girl, educated, who worked for Attiko Metro. She had her opportunities and we are trying to come to terms with it right now."

Her uncle stated: "These are bad things. There must be an end to it, but unfortunately... They didn't have financial problems and there is no such case. It's all lies."
