Femicide in Igoumenitsa: Multiple stab wounds to back and neck of 25-year-old woman
The 27-year-old former partner was arrested after confessing to the act, following three hours of questioning. An autopsy is expected to clarify the circumstances of death.
Multiple injuries revealed by forensic examination
Findings from the forensic examination of the murder of a 25-year-old woman in Igoumenitsa reveal multiple stab wounds at different points on the body, including the back and neck area, Ta Nea reports.
The 27-year-old former partner was arrested in connection with the case. According to the authorities, he initially attempted to present a different version of events, but fell into contradictions and is said to have subsequently confessed that he himself caused the death of the 25-year-old.
The forensic findings
An autopsy at the site where the body was found was carried out by Ioannis Aivatidis, head of the Forensic Service of Epirus, who also examined the 27-year-old at Filiates Hospital, where he is hospitalised under police guard.
The young woman had injuries from a sharp object at multiple locations. The findings include defensive wounds, associated with an attempt to ward off the attack. The injury to the neck area was particularly serious. The exact sequence of the blows and full conclusions regarding the circumstances of death are expected from the autopsy-necropsy.
The staged attack by "hooded individuals"
At 21:44, the 27-year-old called emergency services and claimed that he and the 25-year-old had been attacked by unknown assailants.
"Four hooded individuals attacked us to rob us, they hit me and my girlfriend, I'm not far from the location, come and find me," he is said to have stated.
About five minutes earlier, a passer-by had already alerted the authorities after finding the 25-year-old seriously injured at a kiosk in the area. Police officers who rushed to the scene found the 27-year-old hiding nearby. He had injuries which, according to the investigation, he is said to have inflicted on himself in order to support the version of an attack by third parties.
Three hours of questioning, confession and contradictions
The 27-year-old was taken to Filiates Hospital, where he was placed under police guard. During his questioning, he began to give different versions of events — amongst other things citing financial disputes — but without avoiding contradictions. After approximately three hours, he is said to have admitted that he attacked his former partner and caused her death.
According to information being examined by the authorities, the couple had separated approximately one month before the crime. The 27-year-old is said to have travelled from Athens to Igoumenitsa to meet his former partner, carrying with him, according to the investigation, the weapon used in the attack — a matter being examined by the authorities.
"We didn't hear them arguing"
The landlady of the 25-year-old, speaking to MEGA, described the couple's relationship as calm.
"Separate, very good, and he seemed quiet. He smoked all day, waited for her. We didn't hear them arguing or anything. But now at the end they split up," she said.
The 25-year-old, named Penelope, worked for a fish-farming company in Igoumenitsa and was preparing to return to Athens for postgraduate studies. "Penelope was a very good girl. We are all devastated right now. She was leaving us, going to Athens to continue her studies with a postgraduate degree," said her employer.
A family struck for a second time
The grief for the 25-year-old's family is heavy. Her mother had lost her husband just two years before. The landlady recounted the moment she learned the news: "Her mother called me and said 'go over for a bit until I come from Athens, I don't know, is it true, is it a lie?'. And they found her there at the kiosk. We went to the police and they told us that he had killed her."
The case is at the centre of the authorities' investigation. Full results of the forensic examination are awaited, whilst the 27-year-old will face the judicial process whilst hospitalised under police guard.
