Shortly before 2:00 in the morning, police received emergency calls from neighbours who heard a woman calling for help. Two patrol cars arrived at the scene within five minutes. The neighbours immediately informed them that the voices had stopped. The 41-year-old was slow to open the door. When he finally did, officers found the woman dead on the floor, with a knife in her hand.
The couple's two daughters, aged 6 and 10, were asleep in the adjoining room. They were taken to hospital, where they were examined by a coroner, who found no indication that they had witnessed anything. Police are investigating two possibilities: either the children lived under a regime of terror, or the tensions were so frequent that they had come to accept them as normal.
The 41-year-old quickly admitted guilt, invoking self-defence: he claimed he was asleep, woke up and saw his wife threatening him with a knife, that they struggled, he disarmed her and killed her. The coroner's examination, however, found no defensive wounds on his body. Answers are expected from the full coroner's report and the autopsy that has been ordered. The accused will be called to testify before the prosecuting authorities at the Kalamata Court building.
After the crime, the neighbourhood began to speak openly. The couple's quarrels were frequent and intense. The 41-year-old systematically accused his wife of infidelity. In one of the incidents, the 39-year-old herself had told those around her that her husband beat her with his belt.
