Medical Association of Athens on Mazonakis death: Three surprise inspections at Kolonaki clinic – no prosecutorial intervention
The Medical Association of Athens presented a chronology of inspections at the Kolonaki clinic linked to the death of Giorgos Mazonakis, categorically denying reports that "a prosecutor entered" the Association.
Medical Association of Athens: Three unannounced inspections at Kolonaki clinic before Mazonakis death
The Medical Association of Athens (MAA) presented a chronology of inspection activities for the clinic in Kolonaki at the centre of the case involving the death of Giorgos Mazonakis, according to Newsit.gr. In a detailed statement, the MAA rejects claims about how it handled the information at its disposal and categorically denies reports of prosecutorial intervention at its offices.
No complaint until 9 September 2026
A review of the MAA's electronic filing system showed that from the clinic's licensing on 4 July 2013 until 9 September 2026, no formal complaint had been submitted regarding its operation or the equipment installed there.
However, the MAA reveals that as early as July 2025, it had received informal oral information from a member-physician and had issued an order for an immediate and unannounced inspection, with clear instructions to investigate the reported treatments and the existence of relevant equipment. This physician, despite the MAA's request, refused to file a written complaint, something that would have facilitated assistance from other authorities, such as the National Transparency Authority (NTA) and the Police.
Three surprise inspections — no plasma apheresis equipment found
Following the oral information, the MAA's competent Inspection Committee conducted three unannounced inspections at the clinic. During these inspections, no plasma apheresis equipment was detected, to which the initial oral notification had referred, according to the Association's statement.
On 23 July 2026, the physician without specialisation who operated the clinic sent a letter-declaration to the MAA with the subject "Declaration of replacement attachment for ozone therapy equipment", dated 21 July 2026. In the declaration, she explicitly stated that "she proceeded to acquire a replacement attachment for the ozone therapy equipment already installed at the clinic". Due to this declaration, the responsible employee filed the letter in the folder in order to place it before the Inspection Committee for establishing the legality of possession and use.
Invoice for €29,509.98 triggers new inspection
On 4 September 2026, the Deputy Head of Administrative Services of the MAA, returning from regular leave, proceeded to process the letter-declaration and attached documents. She then discovered that among them was an invoice dated 5 June 2026, written in English, for a total amount of €29,509.98, with reference to the purchase of an "inuspheresis double Filtration Device" equipment.
This finding led to the decision to schedule a new surprise inspection-examination at both co-located clinics, within the following days of September, in order to determine the exact nature of the equipment mentioned in the invoice.
The final Inspection Report, dated 10 September 2026, was given a file number because it was to be forwarded — and was forwarded — to the competent police authorities. The other inspection reports constitute internal documents of the service, while a file number is assigned only to Inspection Findings issued after completion of the inspection process.
Categorical denial of prosecutorial intervention
The MAA absolutely denies any claim that there was prosecutorial intervention at the Association regarding this matter. Specifically, it characterises the claim that "a prosecutor entered" the MAA as "utterly untrue and contrary to fact".
The Association clarifies, however, that the competent prosecutor at the Athens District Court has requested information regarding the inspections carried out at the clinic, and that this information will be provided to him. The difference, the MAA emphasises, is fundamental: it is a request for information provision, not prosecutorial intervention at the Association.
The two physicians who operated at the Kolonaki clinic face charges in connection with the death of Giorgos Mazonakis. The MAA states that its statement is aimed at restoring the facts against "inaccurate and defamatory claims" that circulated publicly in recent days.
