60-year-old Messinia arsonist remanded in custody
On Friday, 4 September 2026, a 60-year-old man accused of four arsons in the wider Messinia region was remanded in custody, according to Newsit.gr. The decision was made with the agreement of the investigating judge and prosecutor at the Kalamata courts.
The accused gave a statement lasting over four hours regarding intentional fires, committed serially and with continuance. He denied any involvement in the fires attributed to him.
A key piece of evidence in the case file is reportedly video footage collected by the Investigation Unit for Combating Arson Crimes in Messinia, in which, according to the authorities, the 60-year-old is identified.
The defence cited the serious health problems the accused faces and stressed that the fires broke out over a limited area, without serious material damage.
The judicial authorities are reported to have placed particular weight on developments following the initial arrest: on 27 August, as part of flagrante delicto proceedings, the 60-year-old was arrested for two fires and subsequently released. Three days later, according to the indictment, he is alleged to have caused two more fires.
The accused is expected to be transferred to a correctional facility to be designated by the competent authorities.
