A court in Crete has imposed a ten-year prison sentence on a 27-year-old driver of Egyptian origin, who was found guilty of a fatal road accident that resulted in the death of a 23-year-old woman, Maria.
The court did not recognise any mitigating circumstances for the defendant. Outside the courtroom, relatives and friends of the unfortunate young woman wore white t-shirts bearing the photograph of the 23-year-old and messages in Arabic as well. Upon hearing the verdict, they burst into applause, shouting "for Maria".
The case had shocked the local community of Crete. The victim, 23-year-old Maria, lost her life in the road accident caused by the 27-year-old defendant. The family and friends of the young woman attended the trial seeking justice for her death.
The court's decision concluded a judicial process that had begun following the tragic incident. The defendant was held responsible for the death of the young woman and was sentenced to ten years imprisonment without the recognition of any mitigating circumstances.
