A court in the capital has convicted two former officials of the Payments Organisation, including the former chairman, of serious disciplinary and criminal offences. The court panel found that the defendants conspired to conceal a document concerning illegal subsidies, causing damage exceeding €120,000.
The case concerning the suppression of the document has been separated and referred to a higher court, as the extent of the damage justifies upgrading the charge. The defendants were found responsible for both harbouring a criminal and breach of duty.
By majority, both defendants were recognised as having the mitigating circumstance of previous lawful conduct. A decision on the sentences is awaited.
