A court in Patras imposed a life sentence on a 58-year-old man for the murder of a 52-year-old that took place in February 2025 in a village in Elis. The judges found him guilty of intentional manslaughter, whilst acquitting him of charges relating to two attempted murders against individuals present at the crime scene.
The incident concerns the death of Pavlos Giannakoulopoulos. The two men had met at the home of the convicted man with the aim of settling personal disputes. During the trial it emerged that the 58-year-old had brought a pistol to the meeting and had decided in advance to use violent means if the discussion did not result in an agreement.
The defence counsel had requested that mitigating factors be recognised, however the court did not accept any of the requests. Additionally, the convicted man was punished with three years' imprisonment for offences relating to the possession and use of a weapon.
The prosecutor had described the accused as an unscrupulous perpetrator, arguing that his act was premeditated and not the result of momentary impulse. The proposal of the prosecuting authority was accepted by the judges, who rejected the self-defence claims raised by the defence.
The victim and the perpetrator had tensions that had escalated over time, a fact that led to the fatal meeting in the Roupakio settlement. The prosecutor had pointed out that the 58-year-old had taken the decision to use the weapon before even arriving at the meeting point, whilst categorically rejecting the claim that the pistol discharged by mistake due to nervous tension.
