10-year sentence imposed on 16-year-old for murder of peer in Serres
A Juvenile Court in northern Greece imposed the maximum custodial sentence on a teenager who was found responsible for the death of a 17-year-old following a violent altercation. The decision was issued by the Three-Member Juvenile Court of Serres, which sentenced the 16-year-old to ten years' imprisonment, which constitutes the highest penalty for minors.
The incident occurred on the eve of Epiphany of the current year. Surveillance camera footage showed the convicted defendant walking together with two companions towards the city centre. According to his own admissions during the investigation, the altercation began over a personal dispute involving a young woman.
The accused admitted that he repeatedly struck the victim with punches and kicks. The post-mortem examination revealed serious injuries in multiple areas of the body of the unfortunate teenager. Bruising was found on the face, ears, the area around the eyes, lips, chest, upper and lower limbs, as well as on the fingers. Dried blood was also found on the nose, whilst there were abrasions on the neck, collarbones, elbows, wrists, back and waist.
The findings of the investigation and testimonies demonstrate that the 17-year-old who lost his life did not mount strong resistance, but was found to be mainly in a defensive position during the attack. The public prosecutor had sought the conviction of the perpetrator on the basis of the relevant provision of the Penal Code concerning premeditated homicide.
