A court in Lasithi imposed a ten-year prison sentence on a 55-year-old man for the death of Jean Hanlon, a Scottish woman who had permanently settled in Crete. Her body was found in the sea at the port of Agios Nikolaos in March 2009.
Initially the death had been attributed to drowning, but new evidence led to a fresh investigation. The court decision came 17 years after the incident, with the appeal to have a suspensory character under conditions.
The convicted man was found guilty with reduced culpability. He is required to be monitored monthly by a psychiatric clinic in Heraklion, with reports to be sent to the Lasithi Public Prosecutor's office.
The victim's children broke down in tears when the sentence was announced. The case had occupied Greek and international authorities for years.
