Statement by 43-year-old in Chania murder case — felony charges
According to Google News GR — Crime (el), the 43-year-old charged with the murder of 45-year-old Stavroula Leventaki was brought today, Friday 26 June, shortly after 10:00 a.m., before the examining magistrate in Chania. He faces charges of wilful homicide at the level of a felony, as well as additional charges.
The defendant has admitted to the act following evidence gathered by police authorities during the investigation. According to his solicitor, he appears remorseful, which — according to the defence — contributed to his decision to confess. Police sources point out, however, that the findings of the investigation were particularly incriminating, making the confession almost inevitable.
According to the case file, the 43-year-old repeatedly attacked the woman inside the house where she lived and which she had let to him for rent, ultimately taking her life. After the murder, he remained in the house throughout the night with the victim's body. The next day, he is alleged to have wrapped the body and transported it to a rural area, where he buried it in an attempt to cover up the crime.
He subsequently attempted, according to authorities, to continue his daily life as if nothing had happened. He visited a relative bringing sweets, continued his professional activities in the construction sector, and is alleged to have changed vehicles in order to hinder his identification.
For approximately ten days he believed that his involvement would not be discovered. The use of modern technological means combined with the investigation by the Chania Crime Investigation and Prosecution Section ultimately led to his arrest and the resolution of the case.
The case has caused significant disturbance in the local community of Chania, as information about the circumstances of the crime that has come to light is reported to provoke revulsion.
Following his statement, the 43-year-old is expected to be remanded in custody, if he is deemed to be held provisionally, pending trial of the case. Police authorities clarify that no evidence has emerged so far indicating the involvement of a third party — the defendant is alleged to have acted alone both in committing the crime and in concealing it.
