Chania: Young man arrested following apartment fire
Thick smoke began pouring from an apartment in a residential building on Ioannos Mastorakis Street in Chania on Sunday afternoon, near Frankish cemetery.
The Chania Fire Service was immediately notified and dispatched six firefighters with two vehicles to the scene. Police forces were mobilised simultaneously.
Neighbours had observed the apartment's resident leaving the building. The subsequent investigation indicated that the source of the fire was likely caused by the actions of the resident himself.
Upon the arrival of the fire service personnel, the perpetrator hurled a stone at the windscreen of a vehicle, though without causing injury to any of the firefighters. He then attempted to escape but was located and arrested shortly afterwards by police officers.
