Chania: Spanish cruise ship passenger arrested for possession of substances

In Chania, coast guard officers arrested a Spanish national passenger aboard a cruise ship after prohibited psychotropic substances were found in his possession. The incident became known on Monday, 13 July 2026, although it had occurred during the previous 24 hours.

The cruise ship "Scarlet Lady" made an unexpected stop at the port of Souda following a modification of its original itinerary. The forced change was deemed necessary given that the authorities of both Turkey and Egypt refused to permit it entry into their ports. The reason was the thematic nature of the cruise and the profile of the passengers — the ship had been chartered for a month-long voyage with participants who were primarily from the LGBTQ+ community.

As the vessel approached Souda, ship security personnel detected small quantities of cocaine and cannabis on the Spanish passenger. The coast guard was immediately notified and proceeded with his arrest.

After being brought before the Chania Prosecutor's Office, the arrested man was deported by air back to his home country. The procedure was completed without further complications.
