Hand grenade on Acharnes Street: second firebombing attack on health-related establishment

In the early hours of Sunday, two unknown assailants launched a firebombing attack with a defensive-type hand grenade at a health-related establishment on Acharnes Street, according to To Vima. The same shop had been targeted in an attack by unknown perpetrators on 8 September, when extensive material damage was caused.

According to the Hellenic Police (ELAS), the assailants were travelling on a motorcycle and at approximately 04:25 threw the hand grenade inside the shop. The projectile, however, did not detonate. No injuries have been reported from the incident, according to information available so far.

Disposal operation and traffic arrangements

Police forces and a team from the Explosive Devices Disposal Unit (TEEM) immediately arrived at the scene. The team undertook examination of the object and collection of evidence relating to the attack.

Due to the operation, traffic was suspended on a section of Acharnes Street — from the level of Julianou Street to the level of Heyden Street — as well as on Peron Street, from the level of Phyles Street. Traffic arrangements remain in effect for the duration of examination of the object by TEEM.

Investigation into possible connection with previous incident

Authorities are investigating whether the new attack is connected to the one on 8 September at the same shop. The investigation into locating the assailants behind both incidents is ongoing.
